Ikoi no Yu: A Relaxing Onsen Experience in Kitsuki City – Natural Hot Spring Review

When people think of Oita Prefecture, hot springs immediately come to mind. Known as “Japan’s Onsen Prefecture,” Oita boasts the highest number of hot springs and the largest volume of natural hot spring water in the country. While Beppu’s historic “Takegawara Onsen” is famous, I wondered if there was a more accessible hot spring in Kitsuki City. That’s when I discovered “Ikoi no Yu.”

Located just outside the city center, “Ikoi no Yu” offers an affordable and authentic onsen and sauna experience. It turned out to be the perfect relaxation spot! In this article, I’ll share everything you need to know, from access details to my firsthand experience.

How to Access “Ikoi no Yu” and Nearby Facilities

“Ikoi no Yu” is about a 15-minute walk from the shopping area in Kitsuki City (Sanlive Kitsuki Store). While walking is an option, it is more convenient to reach by car or bicycle. The surrounding area features Joyfull Kitsuki (a family restaurant), Fashion Center Shimamura, and a drugstore, making it easy to stop by while shopping or dining out.

Directions to “Ikoi no Yu”

Cross Takayama Bridge from Kitsuki City Center and continue for about 500 meters.

Turn left at the T-junction near Fashion Center Shimamura.

Take the first right, and you’ll arrive at your destination.

About “Ikoi no Yu”

“Ikoi no Yu” is part of the “Ikoi no Mura” complex, managed by JA Oita. This natural hot spring is a beloved spot among locals. The onsen water, sourced from 700 meters underground, is rich in minerals and flows directly into the baths. With a pH level of 9.5, it is classified as an alkaline hot spring, known for its gentle effects on the skin.

Hot Spring Experience – Pure Relaxation in Natural Onsen

After paying the entrance fee (¥500 for adults), I headed straight to the bathhouse. Valuable items can be stored in coin lockers for just ¥20, so you can bathe worry-free.

Although the facility is compact, shampoo, conditioner, and body soap are provided, and towels can be purchased at the reception desk, making it convenient even for those visiting empty-handed.

The bath area is simple, featuring an indoor bath, a cold-water bath, and a sauna, but no outdoor bath. However, the facility is well-maintained and clean, providing a comfortable environment to enjoy the onsen.

The water temperature is slightly on the hotter side, making it ideal for colder days or for those who prefer a thorough warm-up. Unlike hot water adjusted to a lukewarm temperature in many super sento, this onsen maintains a pleasantly warm natural temperature.

Sauna & Cold Bath – Great Value for Money!

The sauna is a dry sauna that fits around six people and comes with a TV. While it doesn’t have any extravagant features, the fact that you can enjoy both the onsen and the sauna for just ¥500 makes it an excellent value for money.

The cold bath is small (fits about two people), but it is properly chilled, providing a refreshing cooldown. After cycling between the sauna and cold bath a few times, I felt completely rejuvenated.

  • High-quality onsen water that leaves your skin smooth
  • Great value – just ¥500 for both onsen and sauna
